STÄHLI
Susanne

Susanne Stähli was born in 1959 in Munich and studied art and therapeutics of art in Ottersberg. After finishing her studies, she worked as a freelance artist and took part both in solo and group exhibitions, e.g. in Dortmund (Arke Galerie), Bochum (Galerie bo7) and Witten (Städlicher Saalbau). In 1989 she was awarded with the special art prize of the city of Witten. The work of Susanne Stähli belongs to the school of nonfigurative painting. Dominant on the canvas is a broad painted background color, its plain surface interrupted by several dots of different colors which darken or brighten the prime surface, in this manner, the compositions receive an artificial space of colors and, at the same time, suggest a nonfigurative world of colors which is not limited to the factual boundaries of the painting but appears to continue beyond the canvas. This actual and artificial space is sometimes interspersed with clusters of graphic lines which appear to be the smaller part of a greater totality. The juxtaposition of light and dark colors provide the paintings with a virtual luminous quality. It is this lamination which evokes in the eye of the spectator, an impression of sublime drama.
